As holidays are winding down, and the backpacks are coming out of hiding. While the start of a new school year can feel exciting, it also brings change — and change can be tough.
Here’s how you can help your child ease into the first weeks back and build a strong foundation for the term ahead.
Start adjusting sleep and meal times gradually, ideally 3–5 days before school starts. A calm morning routine (with time for connection) can set the tone for the whole day.
Ask open-ended questions like “What are you looking forward to?” and “Anything you feel nervous about?” Talking things through helps kids feel seen — and more in control.
Forget perfection. Focus on effort and progress. Celebrate little things: packing their bag, asking a question in class, finishing a task. This builds early momentum.
The first weeks back can be draining. Avoid overloading them with study pressure. Try short, focused learning sessions — 10–15 minutes is enough.
After school, give your child time to rest, play, or just be. Not everything needs to be “productive” — and that’s okay.
The first weeks of school aren’t about racing ahead — they’re about settling in. With small routines, open conversations, and emotional support, you can help your child feel grounded and ready to thrive.
